In a contract worth nearly £1m over three years, will supply the Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership in the UK with portable speed enforcement equipment and fixed red light and speed enforcement systems. This will be the first major installation in Europe using the new design Redflex SmartPole following recent success in the Middle East & New Zealand.
The contract is for up to 30 Redflex red-speed fixed red light and speed cameras and around six Redflex lasercamSL portable laser speed enforcement systems. Installation of infrastructure and sensors, and back office equipment will commence immediately, with delivery of the Redflex lasercamSL equipment to follow in spring 2009, while the fixed speed and red light cameras will be installed in mid 2009.
Purchase of Redflex speed systems is designed to update current equipment and, in the case of the fixed speed cameras, to upgrade from wet film to digital photography. This enables higher quality images to be quickly transferred to the back office, reducing the need for site visits and speeding up the enforcement process.
Terry Marsh of Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership, which is comprised of Suffolk County Council, Highways Agency, Suffolk Constabulary, Ipswich Hospitals NHS Trust, Crown Prosecution Service and Suffolk Magistrates Court, said, "By targeting the most appropriate accident sites, we have found that enforcement cameras slow drivers down and make them more aware of what's going on around them, reducing the number of accidents. Where collisions do still occur, people are either not hurt or are less seriously injured due to the slower speeds".
Since launching in 2003, Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership has achieved outstanding crash reduction rates: killed and seriously injured casualties are down by 80 per cent, and killed and serious injury collisions have dropped by 70 per cent.
The decision to purchase Redflex enforcement equipment was taken in light of the fact that approved systems currently available in the UK did not meet Suffolk County Council's requirements or specification.
Commented John Harris, Redflex's European Business Director, "We are delighted that Suffolk Safety Camera Partnership has chosen Redflex to supply their enforcement requirements over the next three years, and are confident that the equipment we supply will meet or exceed their specifications."
